Four capabilities matter when you are evaluating an orchestration layer. n8n covers all four, and where it does not, code does.
Visual workflow builder
Node-based workflows assembled in a visual designer. Each node is a step - an API call, a transformation, a conditional, a database write, a custom function. Workflows are stored as JSON, version-controllable in Git, and reviewable by anyone who can read a diagram. The visual layer is what makes workflows owned by the team running the business process, not the developer who built them. For complex flows, a workflow can call sub-workflows; the design scales with the problem.
Self-hosted runtime
n8n runs on your infrastructure. Cloud or on-premise. Single container or scaled across multiple workers. The execution engine handles scheduling, queueing, retry logic, error handling. No per-execution metering, no opaque cloud-side rate limits. We deploy and manage the runtime - hardening it for production, building the observability around it, handling upgrades. The self-hosted choice removes a class of vendor risk; the operational discipline required is where our delivery sits.
Node ecosystem
Hundreds of pre-built nodes for common systems - CRMs, ERPs, databases, AI platforms, messaging services, file stores, HTTP APIs. Most integrations a typical organisation needs already exist. When they do not, the gap is usually a few hours of code, not a six-month vendor procurement. The ecosystem evolves; new nodes appear regularly. We track what is available and what is worth building from scratch.
Code extensibility
For logic that does not fit a pre-built node, n8n exposes a Code node running JavaScript or Python. Custom data transformations, bespoke API contracts, specialised business logic - all live inside the same workflow, with the same versioning and observability as everything else. This is the boundary between low-code convenience and full developer control, sitting in one platform instead of forcing a switch to a different tool. The Code node is where most n8n implementations end up extending what came out of the box.
